Conservatives Consume More Porn Than Liberals

Hypocrisy is still alive and well in the USA. A new nationwide study finds that conservatives consume more porn than liberals. “Some of the people who are most outraged [about online pornography] turn out to be consumers of the very things they claimed to be outraged by,” says the study’s author Benjamin Edelman.

Americans may paint themselves in increasingly bright shades of red and blue, but new research finds one thing that varies little across the nation: the liking for online pornography.

A new nationwide study (pdf) of anonymised credit-card receipts from a major online adult entertainment provider finds little variation in consumption between states.

“When it comes to adult entertainment, it seems people are more the same than different,” says Benjamin Edelman at Harvard Business School.

However, there are some trends to be seen in the data. Those states that do consume the most porn tend to be more conservative and religious than states with lower levels of consumption, the study finds.

  1. come on, now. Prof. Ben Edelman is a known liberal politico. Just look at where his funding comes from, the sources of his grants. Also, how do you know that people as say they are conservatives are truly so; could they be liberals lying to alter the outcomes. Anyone one who makes hay on this poorly done study is just a silly liberal politico as is the study principal.

Using anonymous credit card receipts as an indicator and then to ask questions of people who would lie when asked about their use of porn is just plain silly. It proves nothing, and I say this as an apolitical researcher. If you are going to do a study do it correctly without bias or with at least some controls that can be tested.

Unbelievable for what passes as research today. Silly, but also very sad. I remember when the search for truth was paramount over the chance to make a point either political or cultural.

  2. Are you sure you’re apolitical? Accusing liberals of pretending to be conservatives is something I’ve heard Rush Limbaugh do, and I say this as a non-voting libertarian.

Mark Foley, Eliot Spitzer, Larry Craig, and Ted Haggard are just a few recent examples of the kind of people who “turn out to be consumers of the very things they claimed to be outraged by.” They and their ilk make this study’s results believable.
